So you’ve bought your first dildo, now what? Or maybe you’re considering getting one, but want to make the most out of your purchase.
Don’t worry, boo, I got you.
Sex toys can be expensive, and sometimes overwhelming to try to decide what to get. There’s multiple articles here on SmexEd about the different types of sex toys out there, and I’m gonna assume you’ve found one that you’re ready to give a whirl. Check out our article on How To Find The Right Vibrator For You for help!
First, always make sure you’re relaxed and in the mood. Take some time to warm yourself up and get cozy – maybe light some candles, dim the lights, set some music, and make sure you have plenty of lube available.
Now it’s time to get to the real fun.
Use all available surfaces
If you’re a bath girlie, consider getting a dildo with a suction cup – it makes for a ton of fun in the bathtub. You can suction that puppy to anything:
- the shower wall
- the side of the bathtub
- the bottom of the tub
- the edge of the tub

And if you wanna keep out of the water, you’ve can use:
- wooden chairs
- mirrors
- walls
- coffee table
- stool
- bench
- stair
- your headboard
Doggy style
Tip for using your suction-cup dildo in doggy position – find a surface where you can get your feet past the dildo for the most realistic experience. Something like a door jam (where your feet can be on either side of the wall), or be creative and use a metal trash can (or maybe a popcorn container?) that can be braced against the wall to give you some space for your feet AND some leverage for thrusting.

Double up
Don’t be afraid to use multiple sex toys during sexy time. Utilizing a vibrator with a dildo could be the combination that makes you see stars. Or a butt plug with a dildo. Or if you’re super adventurous, two dildos. Just make sure you’re using them properly and practicing safe anal play if you do butt stuff. We don’t want you to be on the internet for getting a toy lost up there.

Try a different stroke
There’s no right or wrong way to pleasure yourself; it’s all about figuring out what you like. So make sure you try different techniques. Using a dildo doesn’t always have to be about deep thrusts; consider these other options:
- trying short and shallow thrusts
- rocking it back and forth when it’s inserted
- adding in a rotating motion while thrusting
- tilting the dildo up when it’s inserted (this can help stimulate some of the clitoral tissue from the inside)
- adding some pressure to your lower belly while inserted

Adjust the temperature
If you’ve chosen a glass dildo, play around with different temperatures. Just make sure you’re doing it safely! Please don’t put your dildo in the fridge, freezer, microwave or oven. A simple bowl of ice water, or warm water will be enough to change the temperature and keep your sensitive bits safe.

Use with your partner
There’s tons of benefits to using a dildo with your partner: increased connection, longer play time, potential for more orgasms, and well, it’s just fucking fun. Some ways to add in a dildo with a partner:
- Use orally to give your partner a show
- Double penetration – either by both your partner and dildo inserted vaginally, or by utilizing one vaginally and the other anally (just make sure your dildo has a flared base if using anally)
- Use alongside a vibrator
- Use alongside fingers or mouth
- Use as a strap-on
Bonus: Upgrade your toys
Once you get the hang of how you like to use sex toys, it’s time to explore some with more bells and whistles. Consider these options for an upgrade:
- Vibrating dildos
- Thrusting dildos
- Textured or realistic dildos
- Squirting dildos
- Double-ended dildos
- fantasy/monster dildos
- Sex furniture that you can attach dildos to
- Dildos with remote controls
- Bouncy ball with dildo
Remember, using sex toys is about having fun and enjoying yourself. Sometimes it takes some experimentation to figure out exactly what you like.
